Carolyn Huynh
Duke University Class of 2021, Neuroscience
Carolyn Huynh graduated from Duke University with a Neuroscience B.S. and Global Health minor. As a freshman, Carolyn helped create a sustainable partnership between Duke and Global Health Network Uganda (GHNU), a community health NGO based in northern Uganda. Through this partnership, Carolyn was able to intern on-site at GHNU, an experience that rooted her interest in the social determinants of health. Back in Durham, Carolyn continued to explore how social determinants, particularly nutrition access and social support, affected neuropsychiatric health outcomes. Carolyn conducted neuroimmunology research in the lab of Dr. Staci Bilbo, where she studied how chronic stress in the form of a maternal high-fat diet impacted brain and behavior changes. She also enjoyed serving as an executive board member of Peer For You, an organization that increased access to mental healthcare on campus by pairing students experiencing mental health struggles with trained undergraduate “peer responders” who provided them with emotional support. Carolyn hopes to combine her medical education with her entrepreneurial skills cultivated at BrainMind to promote healing through clinically impactful innovation.
